Their appearance is the result of a deal between humans and a devil centuries ago and the Tieflings of today have nothing to do with this. Tieflings did get infernal magic from this deal which they use for good more often than not.
Because many people do not trust Tieflings, they have learned to be strong in their ways. They often live among people in the worse neighborhoods of cities where they are forced to steal to stay alive. Since they don't have towns of their own, they have to. Some Tieflings decide to live with other races. They are also more often treated with more respect.

Appearance
Tieflings have three characteristics that allow you to recognize them immediately. They have a long tail with a point at the end of it. In addition, they have eyes that are entirely 1 color with no obvious iris or pupil. These eyes sometimes seem to give off light. Finally, the Tiefling has horns on their heads.
Darkvision
Because they inherited certain things from their ancestors who made a deal with the devil, Tieflings have Darkvision. This means they can see a lot in the dark, think of a cat's vision. That said, if there is no light at all, Tieflings can't see anything either.
Hellish Resisitance
Because their ancestors came from hell, Tieflings have built up a certain resistance to fire. This means that when they are attacked with fire and the attack hits then it only does half the damage of what it would normally do.
Infernal Legacy
The good thing that came out of the deal with the devil is that Tieflings can use certain magic without their class having to be magically inclined. This magic is closely tied to the hell it comes from, and not all Tieflings are happy about this.
